NEUROMYELITIS OPTICA is a type of multiple sclerosis involving mainly the optic nerves. There is massive demyelination of the spinal cord and both optic nerves which usually follows an upper respiratory tract infection. These lesions may develop simultaneously or one after another. Clinically there are evidences of retrobulbar neuritis and paraplegia or quadriplegia with sensory impairment and sphincteric changes. There may be complete recovery but relapse may occur.
